Napa's pretensions haven't traveled as far north as Mendocino County, nor the crowds. The morning fogs that sweep through the Anderson Valley give way to hot, dry afternoons, perfect conditions for pinot noirs and chardonnay. Alsatian varietals such as Riesling and Gewurtztraminer shine here. In the hills, zinfandels flourish. Tastings are generous, often free, in Mendo. You won't find any fake chateaus, hard sells or "no picnicking" signs. Just relaxing, gorgeous places to hang out and drink great wine. What are your favorites?
